In 1928 Penicillin, the first antibiotic was discovered and it revolutionized the treatment of infectious diseases. But now we face another challenge. Bacteria are becoming resistant to antibiotics. Superbugs are strains of bacteria that are resistant to multiple antibiotics are emerging fast. The most important factor in emergence of superbugs is the inappropriate use of antibiotics. This phenomenon is more marked in Pakistan where we use antibiotics without any prescription and advice of doctor. Antibiotics are taken even in viral illnesses in which they have no role. To top it all, mostly we don’t complete course of antibiotics and stop taking them as soon as we feel better.
All this should stop or we will be pushed back to the era where infections were untreatable. People died of diseases that we consider minor today.
